Bollywood and regional films and serials, dubbed or otherwise, are popular today in the west. And the Indian movie industry is one of the biggest in the world. But before we get to those points, what is Bollywood? Bollywood is a term used to describe films from Mumbai which follow Hindi-language cinema. It’s often referred to as "Indian" film as movies made in other Indian languages such as Tamil or Telugu also follow this genre. There are different types of other genres for films which come out of other countries within India such as Gujarati cinema and Punjabi cinema among others which we won’t delve into specifically here. Indian films are often very different from films made in western countries. While films are often made with a lot of money, the budgets are much lower than films made in America, for example. And there’s a big focus on song and dance numbers, which is something that you rarely see done to this extent outside of India. This is actually what sets Bollywood apart from regional films which focus on stories with songs incorporated into them more naturally. Getting back to the movie industry being the biggest in the world, this may not be literally true but it’s pretty close. The Indian film industry has been around for a long time and has been producing movies for even longer. According to the numbers, India made 1,000 movies in 1897 as far as we can tell. This is about as far back as you can go thanks to the unfortunate lack of technology keeping track of the numbers at the time. There’s no real way to know how big or powerful the Indian movie industry was at that point but it’s safe to say that since then they have become a force to be reckoned with. Some people say that Bollywood alone is responsible for 20% of all films made in the world each year which if true would make it bigger than any other country on earth by a wide margin. Today, the Indian movie industry produces something like 1000 movies in a year. Not all of them are made in Hindi-language movies so keep that in mind. But even when you consider that it’s still an incredibly large number compared to western standards. The largest American film studio, 20th Century Fox, produces about 20 films in a year according to their numbers So just how big are Bollywood films? As far as how many people watch them they are massive. India has over 1 billion people living there and something like half of those people watch Bollywood films regularly or at least occasionally. And then you have the whole rest of the world to take into account as well which is another billion or so people. That’s a lot of movies to be watching and those numbers keep growing as more and more people get access to things like the internet and television on a wide scale which is pushing Bollywood films out into the world. You can now watch Indian movies online or buy them online as well as order them through Amazon’s DVD service which has made it much easier to get your hands on them.
